How long does it take to cook food? Cooking your favorite foods is an art. Learning to use the right technique for cooking a dish is just as important as using the right ingredients, and it’s no surprise that some cooking methods take longer than you’d think. For example, did you know it takes 5 minutes per pound to cook food in a pressure cooker? And that sous vide takes about one hour per pound? It’s important to consider not just the technique of cooking, but also how long you’ll be waiting before your meal is ready. Let’s take more about that in this post!
How Long Does It Really Take To Cook?
Depending on what you’re cooking or how it usually takes between one and two hours to prepare a meal. Soups can be prepared in 30 minutes or less; however, many types of meat like pork which requires longer marinating periods will take up more time. Another dish that takes some time to prepare is Chow Mein, but only because the noodles are first boiled before being stir-fried. Some of the meals such as kielbasa, tempeh, chicken, fish, tacos, and hot pocket lean towards a shorter cooking process, requiring less than an hour of preparation time all in all.

Different Cooking Techniques
Here’s a quick overview of how long different cooking techniques tend to take:
Pressure Cooking Method
Pressure cookers work much faster than slow cookers because they get hotter more quickly and reach higher temperatures than most other methods—and that means faster cooking times overall! When using an average electric stovetop pressure cooker set on medium heat (7 out of 10), multiply the number of pounds by 8 minutes per pound for pork roasts and stews; 7 minutes per pound for beef roasts and stews; 6 minutes per pound for stewing chicken parts; 5½ min/lb whole chickens plus giblets; 3½ min/lb quarter portions – leg quarters but not wings which require longer times due to their shape (i.e., drumsticks).
Pressure cookers are great for cooking meat, vegetables, rice, and beans. The high pressure inside the pot cooks food quickly and efficiently. If you’re following a pressure cooker recipe, the cooking time is only about 5 minutes per pound. Pressure cooking can also be used to reduce the amount of water in a recipe by up to 60%.
Sous Vide Cooking Method
Sous vide will cook your food in about 1 hour per pound.
So, how long does it take to cook a chicken? Well, the general rule of thumb is that sous-vide cooking takes about 1 hour per pound. For example, if you have a 2-pound chicken breast (breast only), then it would take 2 hours at 140 F / 60 C. That’s not bad!
Slow Cooker Cooking Method
Another type of cooking is crockpot or slow cooker cooking. If you need to know how long something will take in your crockpot or slow cooker, simply multiply the weight of what’s being cooked by 3 minutes per pound (or 6 minutes per kilogram). So for example, 4 pounds = 12 minutes; 4 kg = 12 minutes.
Air Fryers Cooking Method
Air fryers cook at a rate of 9-12 minutes per pound, depending on what you’re cooking. You can get a lot done in that amount of time:
- Chicken Wings (3 lbs) – 31 minutes
- Chicken Drumsticks (2 lbs) – 22 minutes
- French Fries (2 lbs) – 20 minutes
Deep Frying Cooking Method
Deep frying takes anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on what you’re deep frying. This is a high-heat cooking method that can help you prepare food quickly. It’s also not a good way to cook food if you want to keep it healthy or low-calorie, though.
As an example of how long it takes for deep frying to work, let’s look at some of the steps involved:
- First heat up oil in your deep fryer
- Then place the pieces of chicken in the oil as quickly as possible so they all cook evenly.
- Let them sit there for a while (maybe 10 minutes?) before removing them from the oil
While cooking times for different foods do vary, it’s always a good idea to check the internal temperature of your food before you serve it. That way, you can be sure that your food is completely cooked through.
